Youth Engagement
On March 15th WAM held its second Youth Engagement Summit! We invited students from every high school in the city as well as a handful of interested grade 8 classes and gathered them at TCU Place. Close to 600 students attended the event where they spent the day learning about what each level of government is responsible for and how they interact with one another.
WAM would like to thank TCU Place, Saskatoon Public School Board and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools as well as SaskTel, SaskEnergy and the SOEEA for their support. We couldn't have held such a successful Summit without you!
Speakers included Rob Burton, the mayor of Oakville, Ontario; former premier Lorne Calvert; Saskatoon's youngest city councillor, Mairin Lowen; Derek rope, member of the OTC (Office of the Treaty Commissioner) Speakers Bureau; and MP candidate Nettie Wieb.
Students also had the opportunity to voice their opinions on a variety of subjects: what their schoolyards should look like, where Saskatoon needs new bike lanes, whether or not we should have an official Youth Advisory Council in Saskatoon, and their choice of song to be used in the creation of a music video that will focus on their chosen issues and be used to lobby every level of government in the future.
